Ultrasound examination enables you to observe the many organs in the abdominal cavity like the uterus, ovaries, bladder. First you need to know where to place the abdominal probe, so you must have a good knowladge of the location of the genital organs in animals while they are standing. You must take into notice that the size and volume of the uterus change during the reproductive period of sows. Thanks to ultrasound scanner, vets can undergo sows with ultrasound examination few minutes before slaughter.
The first estrous and ovulation in sows can appear between the age of 5 and 8 months in the different European breeds. Usually estrous accours at regular intervals throughout the year. Estrous is the period when the sow is willing to copulate and this period lasts on average 50 hours. The estrous cycle includes a group of several signals, some of them can be observed using portable ultrasound scanner.
To get good images of the ovary, the female must stand very calm during examination. A good time for examination is feeding time. The probe must be placed then as high as possible in the inguinal zone to see the ovary.
For sows the best probe is abdominal probe, in fact sows can’t be exemined by rectal probe.
